The Fourth Seal Is Opened

And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. (Revelation 6:7, 8)

The fourth seal is opened and reveals an ashen horse and rider coming on the scene. Whether this will occur in the first or second half of the tribulation period is still a big question. If there were a break from the chronological format this would be it. There could also be a larger gap of time between the third and fourth rider, bringing it closer to the midpoint of the tribulation period. Either way it happens, a lot of people are going to die. This horseman is appropriately given the name Death. Through this rider one-fourth of the world’s population will be killed. Considering that today’s population numbers 6 billion, it can be safely assumed that 1.5 billion people will die.

Although the antichrist will come in peace, his agenda will be met through much bloodshed. When his peace plan fails, the offenders will be exterminated. But the world will view his brutal military action as a necessary evil to attain the ultimate goal-world peace. Hunger will also claim a great many lives. But the most frightening death of all will not be human. In that day, wild beasts will kill literally millions of people. God will take away the fear of man from animals. What used to be prey will now become predator.

Just imagine yourself coming home from work. As you drive up to your house, the family pet comes running out to greet you, so you think. Little do you know, he’s already killed everyone in the house…

Scenario: Natural Born Killers
Peering out the front window of my house, I could see something white sticking out of my mailbox. Hmm! There must be mail today. Unlatching the deadbolt, a soft squeal could be heard as I slowly opened my front door. Sticking my head through the opening, I cautiously stepped out onto the porch. As I walked out, I noticed that the evening newspaper was lying face up on the welcome mat in front of the door. Reaching down to pick it up, I could see the words “Nuclear Holocaust Continues!” plastered across the front page. Shaking my head, I paused momentarily contemplating the plight that this world had gotten itself into. These are dangerous times and unlike any the world has ever known.

War has broken out in most of the world leaving a staggering death toll of over a billion people. For years I’d heard the warnings, but never thought I’d see the day when nuclear weapons would be used. They’ve practically destroyed the world and for what! Parts of Asia and Europe are uninhabitable and the aftermath has caused catastrophic plagues and disease worldwide. Massive shortages of food and medical supplies are everywhere raising the prices to levels never before seen. I barely make enough for basic necessities such as food and clothing.

Because food and other provisions are in short supply, I must be extra cautious when venturing outside. You never know who may be lingering in the shadows. Last week, a man in the neighborhood was beaten to death over a loaf of bread.

Lately, there has been word that many are complaining of frequent vomiting, headaches and respiratory problems. This has prompted me to start wearing a gas mask when I go outside.

Flipping through my mail, I noticed my neighbor Jim was just pulling into his driveway. As he jumped out of his car, I yelled over to him prompting a quick wave back. He seemed a little preoccupied as he walked hurriedly toward his front door. As I watched Jim nearing the front door of his house, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a pack of dogs coming up the road from the park. This was a little strange, I thought. I’d never seen that many dogs running free in this neighborhood before. Some kid must have let those dogs free or something. “Someone has got to do something about the hooligans around here!” I said with a look of disdain. This neighborhood just isn’t safe anymore.

Turning my attention to my neighbor, I could see Sam, Jim’s pet German Shepherd, running out from behind the back of the house. When the dog became visible to Jim, he kneeled and patted his leg signaling that he wanted him to come. I could hear him saying, “Good boy Sam” as the dog rushed toward his master. But as he reached down to pet him something went terribly wrong. Suddenly, the dog lunged at Jim knocking him to the ground. As they wrestled on the grass, Sam’s razor-sharp canines shot out like a trap and locked onto Jim’s arm. Struggling to free himself from the jaws of death, I could see other vicious dogs from the approaching pack running over to join in on the kill. One had him by the throat while the others were tearing him a part. The situation had become grave and I had to do something.

In a panic, I grabbed a stick I had nearby and headed across the street. But as I entered the road I caught the attention of some of the other dogs and they began lurking my way. Realizing the great danger that I was in, I began to run with all my might back to the house. As I got to the steps I could feel the brush of their jaws as they snapped at my heels. Turning abruptly, I started waving my stick in a circular motion as they took turns darting back and forth at me. As I stood there, petrified, staring down those snarling beasts, I could see the look of evil in their eyes. They wanted to kill me with everything that was in them. Using the stick to keep them at bay, I steadily backed my way up my front porch and jumped behind the door. My heart was racing so fast I thought I was going to pass out. With my back against the door and breathing heavy, I could feel them leaping and pawing at the door. I dare not look out the window for fear they might see me and jump through. Fearing that possibility, I locked the door and ran up to my room.

Shaking and tremble from my brush with death, I sat there bewildered over what could of possibly caused domesticated pets to turn into ferocious man eating beast. This just wasn’t normal and defied the laws of nature. Listening into the night, as they barked and scratched at that door, one by one, they left in search of easier prey.

In the weeks and months ahead I would witness countless brutal animal attacks, many without warning, trapping their prey with nowhere to run. Looking on helplessly, I could see the look of terror on their faces as they awaited their gruesome fate. I remember the vicious mauling that followed as they began to tear their victim a part and consume them, many while they were still alive.

Yes, these are dangerous and terrible times. I fear one day that I will leave my house only to fall victim to these savage beasts. From this day forward I know I must live one day at a time and keep alert at all times. I can’t help but wonder if I can survive or if anyone can!

Are you ready to meet the Lord?  If not, your time is running out!
