With U.S.-Israel ties strained, Obama may make bold move; After Obama's good week, big choices confront him
WASHINGTON — After 14 months of frustration over the moribund Mideast peace process and nearly three weeks of open confrontation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , President Barack Obama shows no sign of backing down — and may be about to double his bets.
The administration is said to be preparing a major peace initiative that would be Obama's most direct involvement in the conflict to date, and would go far beyond the tentative, indirect Israeli-Palestinian talks that were torpedoed earlier in the month.
"It is crystallizing that we have to do something now. That this can't go on this way," said one of the officials who, like the others, wouldn't speak for the record because of the issue's sensitivity.
The Obama administration is said to believe that Netanyahu has more control over Jewish settlements than he admits, and political flexibility to dump his right-wing partners and form a government with the moderate Kadima party if he chose.
"Fundamentally, he's going to have to decide between his coalition and his relationship with the United States ," the former official said (McClatchy).
Fresh off his victory in reforming US healthcare, President Obama may be ready to make a bold move in resolving the Middle East peace process. What that move will be has not yet been revealed, but some have speculated that he may introduce a peace process that would involve him directly and would go further than any peace initiative in the past.
The Bible says that the future Middle East peace accord will be between the Antichrist, Israel, and many (Daniel 9:26-27). The many, I believe, will be made up of members from the Arab League, and they will be direct talks. Whether or not Obama will turn out to be this future Antichrist is certainly unknown at this time. The Bible says he (Antichrist) will not be revealed until after the great falling away which I believe to be the rapture of the church (II Thessalonians 2:1-12).
If Obama expects to make a last minute attempt at peace, he'd better be quick about it. At the Arab League summit on Saturday, Secretary-General Amr Moussa told Arab leaders in Libya that they needed to prepare for the possibility that the Israeli-Palestinian peace process may turn out to be a complete failure. One of his suggested alternative plans was to begin talking to Iran in open dialogue about their nuclear program.
If this were to happen it would be nothing less than a foreign policy nightmare for both Israel and the US. The US is trying to isolate Iran over their nuclear program. Having the Arab League do an about face and open up dialogue with them would under mind all their progress. It would also be just one more reason why experts believe Israel has become a security liability to the US.
Obviously, news that the Arab League may be willing to talk to Iran would be a major step in the wrong direction for Israel. The last thing they need is for the Arab League to reconcile with Iran. Frankly, I do not believe this will happen. I still look for Israel to make peace before things get completely out of hand, and I see it happening sooner than later.
I don't know about you, but I am intrigued by this possible bold move that Obama may make in the coming weeks.
