Could Tuesday's Obama-Netanyahu meeting take talks from indirect to direct talks?
The Arab League will turn to the United Nations Security Council to declare an independent Palestinian state if peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians do not bear fruit by September, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit told the Egyptian daily al-Masry al-Youm on Saturday.
According to the al-Masry al-Youm report, the Arab League decision was based on UNSC resolution 1515, which calls for regional Middle East peace, based on the two-state solution (Haaretz.com).
On the eve of an important White House meeting between US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit is warning, if peace talks see no progress by September, the Arab League will seek for the UN to declare a Palestinian state.
Netanyahu is calling for direct talks, but Palestinian leaders believe Israel still hasn't made enough committed moves to warrant such a meeting.
As reported in yesterday's commentary, Palestinian Leader Mahmoud Abbas has handed a list of proposals to US representatives that outlines a number of compromises they are willing to make in order to push indirect talks to direct talks. Today, Palestinian sources are denying that such a list of compromises were ever presented. If they're denying it, that usually confirms that the list is likely real.
Look for Tuesday's meeting to either be a prime time for peace talks to go direct or to yet again stumble. Even though many believe no progress has been made toward moving to direct talks, I think we are going to be surprised as to what comes out of this meeting between Obama and Netanyahu.
