Mideast talks to resume in Egyptian Red Sea resort; 'Hamas may accept a peace agreement with Israel'
The second round of Middle East direct peace talks will resume on September 14th in Egypt. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, will fly to Egypt to oversee the negotiations.
The Jerusalem Post is reporting that Hamas may now accept a peace agreement with Israel if such an agreement resolves the core issues. Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat told Army Radio on Sunday that "it is now time for decisions, not for negotiations" referring to the building freeze (Jpost.com).
This isn't the first time a report has surfaced where Hamas has said they were ready to work toward peace with Israel only for them to deny the claim was ever made a few days later. If this report holds true, this would be a major step forward for the peace process.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested to his cabinet today that he was willing to try something different if it will bring peace with the Palestinians and the entire Arab world.
In
private meetings, Netanyahu has dismissed as secondary domestic political
concerns, saying that what was important was “to reach an agreement I believe
in.”
If such an agreement can be reached, he has said, he will stand before the
Israeli public, and the whole world, and support it (Jpost.com).
The immediate problem that could torpedo talks is the September 26th expiration of the Israeli building freeze. Every official on the Arab side has threatened that talks would cease immediately if the building freeze was not extended.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said it was unlikely that Israel would extend the current building freeze but he did expect a compromise that would likely be worked out behind closed doors. There has always been some limited building going on throughout the settlement freeze but has been, for the most part, ignored by officials on both sides.
The Obama administration has warned Syrian President Bashar Assad that he would be held accountable if he subjected Israel and Palestine to a terror campaign in order to sabotage peace talks. The warning included Hezbollah or any other Syrian connected terror group.
I'm not sure how far Syria is willing to go to prevent direct peace talks from going forward, but it's possible that we may just see the fulfillment of Isaiah 17:3 (complete destruction of Damascus) sooner than we think.
