Population studies show Palestinian Arabs could outnumber Israelis in a few short years; Threat of one state solution could bring about creation of Palestinian state

The Palestinian Authority’s chief negotiator Saeb Erekat denied Wednesday he had claimed the PA would ask the United Nations Security Council to recognize an independent Palestinian state as early as January, saying that he had been misquoted.

The Palestinians will indeed submit a proposal for a Security Council resolution, but one calling to halt Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank, Erekat clarified.

"I completely deny what was published that we will go to the Security Council to get international recognition for a Palestinian state," Erekat said (Haaretz.com)

The Arab population in "historic Palestine" will equal the Jewish population by 2014, and quickly outstrip it thereafter, Palestinian statistics released Thursday said.

The figures published by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics show the Arab population in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip nearing the size of the Jewish population, but with a significantly higher birth rate.

The bureau said the Arab population in the West Bank and Gaza currently stands at 4.1 million, with another 1.4 million Arabs living inside Israel.

That gives a total not far short of the 5.8 million Jews living in the same area, according to current Israeli data.

"The number of Palestinians (Arabs) will reach that of Jewish residents by the end of 2014, around 6.1 million, at the current growth rate," the Palestinian bureau said (AFP).

Israel faces two problems going into 2011. Although, Palestinian Authority’s chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, is denying that he will be seeking the United Nations Security Council to recognize an independent Palestinian state as early as January, that seems to be the direction the global community is pushing him toward. I look for more nations to recognize a Palestinian state early on in the new year. Yes, he may also ask for a resolution to be drafted calling for Israel to halt all settlement expansion in the West Bank but that will not be his main goal.

Israel's second problem is actually their most telling and time sensitive in my opinion. According to birth rate statistics, the Palestinian territories currently have 32.8 births per thousand residents, as compared to 26.2 per thousand in Israel.  It is projected that the Arab population in present and former Israeli controlled territories (Israel, Gaza and West Bank) will be equal to the Israeli population by the year 2014. With the Palestinian territories having a superior birthrate, it would only be a matter of a few years before Israel lost their Jewish majority within their own territory.

Why is this an important fact?  For years, Palestinian Authority officials have threatened Israel with dissolving the PA and the two state solution in favor of a one state solution if the peace talks failed. A one state solution would comprise of Israel officially incorporating all PA territories (West Bank and Gaza) into their territory. All citizens of the West Bank and Gaza would receive all the benefits of the current 1.4 million Arabs living inside of Israel including voting privileges. This would raise the Arab-Israeli population to 5.5 million residents today and it is projected that Israel would lose their Jewish identity in a matter of a few years after 2014.

As you can see, time is not on Israel's side and they know it. It's only a matter of time before a Palestinian state will be created through a two state solution and I have to believe it will be sooner than later.

Of course, if the Palestinian Authority were to dissolve, Israel could deny them citizenship and call for surrounding Arab nations to absorb the 4 million plus Palestinians. But I don't see that happening.  Frankly, if Israel were to do that, they would have to give back much of the West Bank territory, likely to Jordan, if in fact Jordan was even interested in governing that area.  However, Jordan has made it clear that they have no interest in absorbing the Palestinian population. So it's unlikely Israel would be able to push this responsibility onto another country especially since they have already accepted 1.4 million Arabs as part of their present population.  It's also unlikely that the global community, including the United States, would allow Israel to cast aside the Palestinian population without incurring crippling international sanctions and further isolation.

As we close out 2010 and enter into a new year, I look for us who know the Lord to be one step closer to the soon rapture of the church.

Are you ready to meet the Lord? If not, your time is running out!
