Hamas ready for peace talks with Israel
While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday continued to warn of the threats behind the Palestinian factions' reconciliation, one of the mediators in the Hamas-Fatah unity talks expressed surprising optimism.
Palestinian businessman and billionaire Munib al-Masri, who was one of the mediators in the reconciliation talks between Hamas and Fatah, told Ynet that Hamas would be willing to negotiate a peace deal with Israel, based on the 1967 borders.
"During conversations I had with Khaled Mashal and Mousa Abu Marzook, they said that they want to establish a strong government that can achieve a comprehensive peace based on 1967 border," said al-Masri, who has been named as a candidate to head the new government.
When asked to clarify Hamas' intentions, al-Masri stressed the Islamic faction does not refer to a "hudna" – a long-term ceasefire that has already been discussed in the past – but rather a comprehensive agreement. However, he did not mention the issue of recognizing Israel (Ynetnews.com).
Anyone who buys into Hamas changing their goal of annihilating Israel simply does not now the principles and tenets of Islam. It is a principle of Islam to lie if it will forward the cause of Islam. It is a principle of Islam to make peace with a militarily stronger nation and to keep the peace until the Islamic nation gains the upper hand.
Hamas may be ready to negotiate peace with Israel, but any peace accord they may agree to will only serve as a stepping stone to destroying Israel. This is an Islamic principle not only directed toward Israel but to all nations who refuse to submit to Allah.
I suspect Hamas will agree to peace with Israel, but I question whether they will actually recognize them or their right to exist. Frankly, come September, if Hamas agrees to explore peace, I highly doubt the international community will hold them to recognizing Israel. Their thinking, many nations have agreed to a time of peace without recognizing their neighbors right to exist. I believe this line of thinking will become mainstream within the UN, and frankly, a requirement for Israeli recognition will likely play no part in the final creation of a Palestinian state.
I look for the international community to welcome the reuniting of Hamas and Fatah as a step forward in the peace process and to proceed with their plans of unilaterally declaring statehood. Mr. al-Masri didn't mention whether or not Hamas intends to recognize Israel because they don't intend to, but more importantly, they don't believe it will be a relevant issue in the future.
Look for world leaders, including the EU and US, to come around to accepting a Palestinian state that will include Hamas...and possibly on Hamas' terms.
Are you ready to meet the Lord? If not, your time is running out!
