Its "too late" for US to stop Palestinians from applying for UN membership: Abbas

Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, warned that the global economy is entering a "dangerous new phase" on Friday, ahead of the G7 summit in Marseilles, France.

She warned that both advanced and emerging economies faced key economic challenges, and that governments must "act now" to stop further contagion.

"Policymakers should stand ready, as needed, to take more action to support the recovery, including through unconventional measures," Lagarde said.

"The world is collectively suffering from a crisis of confidence, in the face of a deteriorating economic outlook and rising concerns about the health of sovereigns and banks (CNBC.com)."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said that it is "too late" for American and other international powers to prevent Palestinians from applying for membership in the United Nations this month.

"To be frank with you, they came too late," The New York Post quoted Abbas, as saying.

The international powers had "wasted all the time" since the beginning of the year, and even now, less than two weeks before the prospective bid at the United Nations, they still had not produced any concrete proposal, he added (yahoo.com).

United Nations Secretary General seems to be excited about the upcoming recognition.  The Palestinian people are "long overdue" in their quest for an independent state, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday, ahead of a Palestinian push for statehood in the UN planned for later this month.

Ban's comments came a day after Palestinian activists launched a campaign for the recognition of a Palestinian state in the United Nations. The move contradicts earlier reports that the Palestinian Authority was the one who issued the request.

Abbas said the Palestinian request for recognition of statehood within the 1967 borders had reached a point of no return and he could not retract it (haaretz.com).

It appears the official campaign for UN recognition of a Palestinian state has begun and there's no turning back according to Abbas.

In other developments, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stepped up his belligerent rhetoric against Israel, saying Turkish warships will escort future aid boats leaving its territory for Gaza to prevent a repeat of last year's deadly Israeli raid on an aid flotilla.

Erdogan's comments to Al-Jazeera television Thursday were the first time Turkey has said its navy will use force to protect ships attempting to break Israel's blockade of the coastal Palestinian territory. Turkey had already announced it would increase navy patrols in the eastern Mediterranean in response to Israel's refusal to apologize for the raid.

Dan Meridor, the Israeli Cabinet minister in charge of intelligence, called Erdogan's threat "grave and serious."

"Turkey, which declares that Israel is not above international law, must understand that it isn't either," he said Friday (yahoo.com).

This is a very serious development that could easily escalate into a major confrontation between supposed NATO allies.  The Bible says one day soon, these very two nations will clash in the Battle of Gog & Magog (Ezekiel 38 & 39).  Grant it, the Palestinian issue is problematic for Israel, but the presence of Turkey could bring about an explosion that might bring other world powers into the mix.  Iran already has ships in the Red Sea, with Hamas, Hezbollah, and Syria poised to jump into the mix at a moments notice.  The US is attempting to restore ties between the two nations, however, scripture is clear they will eventually be at war.

Also, in a show of continued defiance, President Bashar Assad declared a state of war on Wednesday and issued a general mobilization of troops, Al-Quds newspaper reported Thursday evening.

Operation "Bayrak al-Assad" was implemented secretly, and is a "major military operation" requiring full mobilization of military forces in Syria for concentrated offensives on cities across the country in order to eliminate "terrorists who threaten us," according to the report (jpost.com).

Frankly, I don't see Assad giving into international demands.  What I do see is an international coalition of nations, whether it be NATO or another EU lead invasion, performing another bombing campaign, allowing rebel soldiers to take control of Syria as happened in Libya.  I have to believe this will send a strong message to Iran, Israel, and the rest of the Middle East, that the Arab spring is over...It's now time for peace or else.

A number of years ago, during the Bush administration, I wrote an article that stated history would prove that then President Bush didn't go far enough in the Iraq War.  Not only should he have marched on Iraq but should have went on and conquered a defiant Iran as well.  That would have sent a major message to the rest of the Middle East. In the end, it looks quite certain that will be the direction the world will ultimately take after all.  Bush was right, and so was Cheney.  Unfortunately, many more will die in the near future because we refused to clean up the entire mess known as the Middle East.
