Share Jerusalem, Ex-Mayor Pleads

A former Mayor of Jerusalem said yesterday that there would be no peace in Israel unless parts of the city, including holy sites, were given to the Palestinians.

Teddy Kollek was speaking a day after four Arabs from east Jerusalem were arrested on suspicion of carrying out attacks in which 35 people were killed. Israeli Cabinet Ministers said that they planned to strip the four of their residency rights to deter from terrorism other Palestinians in the city, who have the same freedom of movement as Israelis.

But Mr Kollek, 91, said that the arrests indicated that Israel was losing control of east Jerusalem, home to the city’s Palestinian population, and that parts of the city should be relinquished. He said that he also supported a proposal by Bill Clinton that Israel relinquish sovereignty over a compound in Jerusalem’s Old City that is sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

EU President Denmark Wants Palestinian State By 2005

COPENHAGEN - Denmark, the current holder of the EU presidency, suggested on Wednesday the creation of an independent Palestinian state in 2005 as a part of a plan aimed at reviving the shattered Middle East peace process.

Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller will present the plan to his 14 European Union colleagues when they gather for an informal meeting in the country later this week. Moeller said he believed it was impossible for the Palestinians to carry out institutional reforms demanded by the international community and stop suicide bombings without having a clear goal in front of them.

"It is necessary through parallel progress on security, economic and political matters to strengthen the Palestinians' faith that an independent state is within reach and Israel's faith that they can finally achieve security within their own borders," Moeller said in a statement. END

Analysis

I have a feeling that we are about to see something very big happen in the next 6 to 12 months. With war looming heavy in the Middle East from both the U.S. and Israel, I believe that someone out of the EU is going to step forward. I'm not sure which situation will be solved first, but it is my feeling that the Israeli/Palestinian situation will be solved or at least take a giant leap forward toward peace. I am also convinced that this plan will eventually include sharing Jerusalem and rebuilding the temple. Israelis are tiring of the constant fear of homicide bombers and will give up East Jerusalem which is home to the cities Palestinian population anyway.

Something else to consider, the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem is said to be on the verge of collapsing. Experts say that the holy wall is in need of immediate repair and could crumble to the ground at any time. If the Wailing Wall collapsed that would leave a spiritual void in the life of all Israelis, for they see the wall as a sacred and holy site. This might hasten the need to make a deal with EU officials so that the temple could be rebuilt in the same location as the Wailing Wall.

I also have a suspicion that the U.S. will not attack Iraq at this time either. A proposed plan by the EU will open the door for UN inspections to resume…although this maybe temporary. But for now, this EU political figure will cool the Middle East flames from burning out of control. Of course, this is speculation but I do believe we are at a crossroad.

I don't know about you, but it looks as though the U.S. is being viewed more and more each day as a world bully and the EU as a peacemaker/arbitrator. As time goes on their roles will become more apparent.
