Mr Malone:
What is your view on mystery Babylon of Rev 17-19 and Jer.50-51?
T. Gardner
Answer
Dear T. Gardner:
Thanks for visiting our site. To answer your question regarding the Babylon mentioned in Jeremiah 50-51 & the Babylon in Revelation 17-19. The Old Testament Babylon is a completely different time period from the Babylon in Revelation. Old Testament Babylon was during the time of the reign of Belshazzar, whom God said He would strip the kingdom from, before the day had ended. Within a few hours of that prophecy, Darius of the Medes and Persians swept through Babylon conquering as he went. In fact, the citizens of Babylon were almost relieved that King Belshazzar had been dethroned due to his abuse of power.
New Testament Babylon is referring to a future world power that will one day be destroyed completely in one day. The destruction of this city will be so severe that it will be uninhabitable. The only connection between the two is the name, although the future Babylon isn't known as Babylon today. I believe that it will be the United States. Because she has known the Lord and has now decided to play the harlot with the kingdoms of the world, God will destroy her.
