To send comments and questions please click here to go to our main page October 30th, 2001 The state department has issued a warning to all law enforcement officials and to the American people that they have received information that a terrorist attack on U.S. interests could happen in the very near future. We have been put on a state of "High Alert"! I'm afraid that life, as we know it, has changed forever following the September 11th attack. When I say this I mean that our very safety in America is in grave danger. To what extent, I do not know. After watching two of the countries largest buildings come crashing down, and the Pentagon set ablaze, I can only imagine what could be next. With talk of Russian military weapons and bombs turning up unaccounted for, there is a growing concern that these weapons very well could be in the hands of terrorists around the world. Some, it is believed, have made it into the hands of terrorist nations such as Iran and Iraq. Although, the world is seemingly appalled by the atrocities that have occurred over the last few months, most are not to the point of being "frightened". Life has gone on with a few inconveniences. What am I saying? We aren't near as scared as I fear we're going to get, and it's not near as dangerous as I see it may become. I am still very concerned where this campaign against terrorism is going to lead. Desperate people do desperate things. Recently, I found an article on the Internet that was entitled "THE REAL DANGER IS NUCLEAR. The Big One". Although I've always been aware of the possibility of nuclear weapons falling into the wrong hands, this story opened up my eyes to what dangers we really face in America. They're real, and if in the wrong hands, very obtainable. Below is a portion of the article. "Biological weapons are bad, but so far none has ever caused an epidemic or worked in war. And it is possible that none ever will: Biological agents are notoriously hard to culture and to disperse, while living things have gone through four billion years of evolution that render them resistant to runaway organisms. Having harmed only a few people thus far, the anthrax scare may tell us as much about bioterrorism's limitations as about its danger. There is, on the other hand, a weapon that we know can kill in vast numbers, because it already has: the bomb. If detonated in a major metropolitan area, a crude atomic weapon--of the sort that could be carried in a truck or SUV--could kill 100,000 people or more and render the vicinity uninhabitable for years. In Washington, D.C., such an attack would destroy democracy's seat and kill most of America's leaders. Enemies of the United States probably have the technical capacity to make atomic weapons and have definitely tried to obtain the materials necessary to build them. And we know that if they succeed, Cipro will be of no use whatsoever. The leading atomic threat is Iraq, which has been pursuing weapons of mass destruction throughout Saddam Hussein's ugly reign. Building atomic weapons essentially requires two things: engineering skill and a supply of plutonium or enriched uranium. Iraq appears to have the first and has made repeated efforts to obtain the second. A crude atomic bomb basically consists of conventional explosives timed to go off in such a way that two units of plutonium or enriched uranium slam together, creating a chain reaction. That takes mathematical and engineering knowledge, but the basic process is no longer secret. A 1998 report from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace noted that several college students have designed apparently workable models of atomic bombs, using only information from open technical literature." The Big One; by Gregg Easterbrook) It's scary to think that college students have created workable atomic bombs from information that is readily available to the general public. These bombs, as stated, have the atomic power to kill tens of thousands of people and render a sizeable metropolitan area uninhabitable for years. If this happened in the United States I can't imagine the chaos and fear it would bring. Saddam Hussein said this week, that the attack on Afghanistan could be the spark that sets the world on fire. I don't know if we will encounter a terrorist strike this week or in the near future. It is the protecting hand of God that has kept us from harm this long. But I am concerned that the next attack maybe of a magnitude we have not feared since the cold war. Only difference, these maniacs have nothing to lose. May God's protecting hand continue to be upon America as we continue to face this invisible yet, very real threat.
