Israel very close to attacking Gaza over
missile attacks; Obama calls McCain a hypocrite regarding negotiations with
Hamas
Continuous rocket barrages fired by Palestinians against
Israeli towns in the western Negev cannot persist and a decision on how to act
on the matter is near, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned on Sunday.
"We are very close to a decision point regarding every issue in Gaza," Olmert told ministers at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting. "The present situation cannot continue."
"Our hope is that one day the residents of the South will be able to live a tranquil life," continued the prime minister. Jerusalem Post
Barack Obama has accused John McCain of hypocrisy after the Republican appeared to do an about turn on the question of negotiating with terrorists.
In an interview on Sky News two years ago, McCain told James Rubin he was willing to negotiate with the militant Palestinian group Hamas.
The Republican presidential contender told the former Clinton State Department official: "They (Hamas) are the government, sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another."
He went on: "I understand why this administration and previous administrations had such antipathy toward Hamas because of their dedication to violence and the things that they not only espouse but practice, so...
"But it's a new reality in the Middle East. I think the lesson is people want security and a decent life and decent future, that they want democracy. Fatah was not giving them that." Sky News
After multiple rocket barrages into Israeli border towns, Prime Minister Olmert warned on Sunday that they were very close to making a decision to go forward with a full-scale attack against Gaza. I trust this will be the direction that they take, but again, will be criticized by the world community. Many in the Arab world will once again liken this act of self-defense to the Holocaust, but for the life of me, I certainly don't remember the Jews lobbing rockets into Germany, and out of self defense, Germany waging an attack in an attempt to make them stop. Israel needs to ignore international opinion and finally eliminate this cancer called Hamas... but I don't see that happening.
Speaking of terrorists, over the weekend, Barack Obama called John McCain a hypocrite for questioning his foreign policy of negotiating with terrorists such as Hamas. Evidently, John McCain, in an interview with Sky News, alluded to the possibility that he would consider possible negotiations with Hamas in the future. Whether McCain or Obama say they will or won't negotiate with terrorists groups on this side of their presidential run means little. Eventually, Hamas will be the power brokers of the Palestinians and they will not be denied. Personally, for the sake of prophecy, I see Barack Obama becoming the next US president... but that's not a prophecy! What part he will play in future prophecy, if any, hinges greatly on his success in the next six months. But if he does win, I do look for him to bargain with terrorists (including Syria and Iran) in an attempt to bring an end to the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. He may even pick up where President Bush left off and try to bring peace to the Middle East and established a Palestinian state. If that were to happen, that would certainly raise a number of red flags for me. If he makes an attempt at peace, I look for him to include Hamas in the negotiations and to sympathize with their fight against Israel. It would not be out of the question for peace to be established without Hamas recognizing Israel. It's very possible that Israel will be forced, by international pressure, to sign a peace accord that will call for each side to meet certain guidelines within a given timeframe. Recognizing the existence of each other will likely not be a requirement for this peace agreement. What will be a requirement is that each side will have to meet certain criteria toward peace within incremental time periods.
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, has also stated that if peace were not established by 2009 he would resign. He's made these kinds of threats in the past and has found a way to stay in the game. I don't necessarily see him resigning but I do see some type of appeasement with Hamas giving them a share of the future Palestinian state government.
The next six to twelve months will be very interesting as we continue to draw closer to the rapture of the church.
